Why You Should Be Strict With Your Lube: Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, and the Science of Vaginal Health

Most of us learned to read a sex toy label before we learned to read a lube label. “Body-safe silicone” has become common vocabulary, and rightly so, but the tube of lubricant sitting in the nightstand often gets a free pass. That is a mistake. The lubricant you use touches the most absorbent, delicately balanced tissue on your body, and research over the past decade has made one thing clear: what is in your lube matters just as much as what your toys are made of. Being strict about lubricant ingredients, especially glycerin and propylene glycol, is one of the simplest things you can do to protect your vaginal health.

The Vagina Is a Finely Tuned Ecosystem

To understand why certain lube ingredients cause trouble, it helps to understand what they are disrupting. A healthy vagina maintains an acidic pH, typically between 3.8 and 4.5, thanks to colonies of Lactobacillus bacteria that produce lactic acid. That acidity is not incidental; <cite index=”1-1″>lactic acid acts as a broad antiviral and antibacterial agent, and the lactobacilli that produce it help protect against infection by keeping the vagina acidified. When something disrupts either the pH or the lactobacilli themselves, the door opens for the overgrowth of less friendly organisms, which is exactly how bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections take hold. <cite index=”8-1″>Bacterial vaginosis occurs when protective vaginal bacteria decline and harmful bacteria multiply, and anything you introduce into that environment either supports the ecosystem or works against it.

The Problem With Glycerin and Propylene Glycol

Glycerin and propylene glycol are humectants, small molecules that attract and hold water. They are why many water-based lubes feel slick, stay wet, and taste faintly sweet. They are also the two ingredients most consistently flagged by researchers and clinicians as problematic for vaginal use, for two connected reasons.

Reason One: They Make Lube Hyperosmotic

Osmolality measures how concentrated the dissolved molecules in a fluid are. When a lubricant has a much higher osmolality than the cells it touches, it literally pulls water out of those cells, dehydrating and damaging the tissue it was supposed to be protecting. <cite index=”6-1″>The ingredients that typically drive this hypertonicity are small molecules formulated at high concentrations, namely glycerol and propylene glycol.

This is not theoretical. In laboratory studies using three-dimensional models of human vaginal tissue, <cite index=”6-1″>hyperosmolal lubricants disrupted the barrier function of the deeper cell layers and caused shedding of the surface layers, and researchers concluded that this osmolality-induced disruption of the epithelial barrier may be one of the mechanisms by which lubricant use is associated with bacterial vaginosis risk and increased susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections. Related tissue research found that <cite index=”1-1″>lubricants listing glycerin, propylene glycol, or polyethylene glycol among their top four ingredients showed marked reductions in barrier properties and visible morphological damage to tissue.

The most unsettling part is that this damage is largely silent. <cite index=”1-1″>Hyperosmolal lubricants cause little or no obvious pain or discomfort in most users, yet they have been shown to be toxic to tissue and to increase susceptibility to STIs, and sexual lubricants have been associated in several studies with an increased risk of bacterial vaginosis episodes. In other words, a lube can feel perfectly fine while quietly compromising your body’s first line of defense. Recurring BV or yeast infections that seem to come from nowhere may, for some people, be coming from the nightstand.

Reason Two: Glycerin Can Feed the Wrong Microbes

Beyond osmolality, glycerin has a second strike against it. <cite index=”7-1″>As a sugar alcohol, glycerin can act as a food source for yeast inside the vagina, and clinical research has linked intravaginal use of glycerin-containing products to increased rates of bacterial vaginosis and candidiasis. If you are prone to yeast infections, using a glycerin-heavy lube is a bit like sprinkling fertilizer on the exact organism you are trying to keep in check. Propylene glycol brings its own irritation profile, too: <cite index=”7-1″>it was named Allergen of the Year in 2018 by the American Contact Dermatitis Society, acts as both a sensitizer and an irritant, and poses amplified risk in vaginal tissue.

What the World Health Organization Actually Recommends

This is not fringe wellness advice; it is codified in international guidance. After reviewing the evidence, the WHO issued technical recommendations for personal lubricants. <cite index=”12-1″>The organization recommends that lubricants ideally not exceed 380 mOsm/kg, and because that is difficult to formulate, it considers 1200 mOsm/kg an acceptable upper limit; unfortunately, many commercial lubes far exceed these numbers, with some products measuring over 3,000 mOsm/kg. Clinical reviews note the gap is even wider than that: <cite index=”11-1″>most common, commercially available water-based lubricants fall between 2000 and 6000 mOsm/kg, several times the acceptable ceiling.

The glycol connection is explicit in the WHO’s own technical specifications, which state that <cite index=”14-1″>the osmolality limit of 1200 mOsm/kg can be achieved by keeping total glycol content below about 8.3 percent by mass. Put plainly: the reason so many lubes fail the osmolality test is that they contain too much glycerin and propylene glycol. pH matters as well. Because <cite index=”11-1″>vaginal pH typically sits between 3.8 and 4.5, and alteration of that pH can lead to vulvovaginitis, a vaginal lubricant should be formulated close to that acidic range rather than the neutral pH appropriate for anal use.

Clinicians have absorbed this evidence into everyday practice. A recent medical journal review of lubricant guidance advises exactly the strictness this article is arguing for: <cite index=”9-1″>avoid products containing glycerin, parabens, propylene glycol, fragrance, flavor, or special ingredients claiming pleasure-enhancing properties.

Why Silicone-Based Lubricants Are Considered Safe

Here is where silicone lube earns its reputation. The entire osmolality problem is a water problem: hyperosmotic water-based formulas create an osmotic gradient that pulls moisture out of vaginal cells. Silicone lubricants contain no water and no dissolved sugars or glycols, so there is no gradient to speak of. They cannot dehydrate tissue the way a concentrated water-based gel can, and they contain no glycerin to feed yeast and no propylene glycol to irritate sensitive skin.

Silicone molecules are also large and inert. Rather than being absorbed into the tissue, they sit on top of it as a long-lasting, low-friction layer, which is why silicone lube outperforms water-based options for extended sessions and why it does not need constant reapplication. Because it is not absorbed and contains no bioactive sugars or acids, it does not meaningfully alter vaginal pH or interfere with the Lactobacillus population that keeps the ecosystem stable. This is why clinical guidance so often lands on it as the default recommendation: <cite index=”9-1″>for many patients who are not using silicone sexual aids, a silicone-based lubricant works well and is generally well tolerated.

That parenthetical caveat is the one real limitation worth respecting: silicone lube can degrade the surface of silicone toys over time, so pair it with glass, stainless steel, or ABS plastic toys, or choose a low-osmolality water-based formula when your favorite silicone toy is involved. One more nuance for the strict label-reader: a small number of cyclic silicone compounds have raised safety questions, as <cite index=”2-1″>cyclomethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, and cyclotetrasiloxane, found in some silicone lubes, have been linked to reproductive harm in animal studies. Dimethicone-based formulas without those cyclic ingredients are the cleaner choice.

The Toy-Safe Standard Should Extend to Your Lube

The sex-positive community did something genuinely important when it normalized asking what a toy is made of. Porous jelly toys full of questionable plasticizers largely lost their place on our shelves because buyers got educated and got picky. The exact same standard belongs on lubricant, and arguably matters more, because lube is applied in greater quantity, more often, and directly to mucosal tissue that absorbs what it touches. A body-safe silicone toy coated in a 4,000 mOsm/kg glycerin gel is not a body-safe experience.

Being strict looks like this: flip the bottle over before you buy. If glycerin or propylene glycol appears in the first few ingredients of a product meant for vaginal use, put it back. Skip anything with added fragrance, flavor, warming or tingling agents, or the spermicide nonoxynol-9, which <cite index=”8-1″>along with chlorhexidine gluconate has been shown to kill or suppress protective Lactobacillus. Look for manufacturers that publish osmolality and pH data, because the good ones increasingly do, and favor numbers under 1200 mOsm/kg with a pH near 4.5 for vaginal play. When in doubt, a simple dimethicone-based silicone lube with a short ingredient list is one of the safest defaults available.

Your vagina runs on an acidic pH and a thriving Lactobacillus population, and the wrong lubricant can undermine both without ever announcing itself through pain or irritation. Glycerin and propylene glycol drive most water-based lubes far past the osmolality limits the WHO considers safe, damaging the epithelial barrier and, in glycerin’s case, potentially feeding the very microbes behind yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis. Silicone-based lubricants sidestep the entire problem: no water, no glycols, no sugars, no pH disruption, just slip. You already read your toy labels. Read your lube labels with the same discernment, and your body will thank you for it.
